The Lighter Side of HR
Bad advice: use dog pee to pass a drug test
May 01, 2008
What kinds of questions or problems would you take to your HR department?
In my 10 years in Human Resources, I’ve had some crazy questions and/or situations. Here are some of the most memorable:
1) I had an applicant whose drug screen came back as “not of human origin”. When confronted with the news, he acted confused … “I’m not sure how the canine urine got into my specimen bottle”. Now, how did he know it came from a canine?
2) A homeless person sleeping in the beautiful garden in front of our office building. For some reason, I was the person chosen to talk with him. Maybe they thought he was a potential employee?
3) The Case of the Flapper: one employee would walk behind trucks on the loading docks so only the lower half of his body was visible – then flap his privates at unsuspecting women walking by. When caught “red-handed”, he claimed he was just urinating. There was a bathroom 40 feet from were he was standing.
4) An unknown employee had a rather large evacuation of his bowels and left his unflushable deposit for someone else to find. I was rather surprised when the ‘someone else’ came into the HR office, told me about the situation then waited for me to offer a solution.
5) Returning from a week long vacation, I found the following note on my desk, “There is a dead cat on the back porch, what do we do?”
Never a dull moment!
