i have found that the one thing that truly delivers results is networking. i make it a point to meet someone new in my profession once a month, solely for career networking. that's why i love communities like hrguru -they make networking so easy!

I only use Monster.com. The have the most postings for HR for sure.

I think alumni networks are the best. We have an online network at UC Berkeley, and I alums essentially volunteer to be a contact for jobseeking alums. I've networked with a few people from my college that have been really helpful.

Speaking for all of the poor networkers out there - I have always found that going to career counselors either at school or through an agency has worked for me. It really helps for getting your resume in order, providing you with some income while you are looking for a job, and giving you insight into what's out there.

It's all about who you know. Failing that, try job boards have been a distant second in my experience!

If you are a student (as I am) the truth is that you have every connection you need (at least 1 or 2 degrees of separation from the one you need). Your faculty probably knows someone...since they have a reputation. Make friends with your profs.

I agree with Lars!  Making friends with your professors is very important because they have lots of contacts usually in a variety of industries.  Other then connections I think the 2nd easiest thing is to get active in a community site like this one HR, I hang around because I enjoy the whole community vibe and how the content is tailored to people like me in the HR world, but for those seeking a job this site provides fantastic resources for getting into HR.  After that, I would hit up all the bigger online job boards like Monster, but with those you need to be extra agressive and send many more resumes.  You can also talk to your career counselor at school and he/she wil definitely get you on the right track.

It's who you know, so network network network to have the doors open to you, and to land that interview. It is up to you to wow them at the interview.

NETWORK! It's by far the most effective way to get a job. I once heard that over 70% of jobs are landed through networking.

I failed to add "be professional, polite, and treat others the way you want to be treated".  People will remember you better that way, and you never know when you might need help in landing your next role, or in other areas.

All of these responses are great.  I do alot of networking, but I've also got a friend who's teacher got her her first and only job.  The teacher knew of a job opening, and the job was so good, my friend stuck with it for her entire career.

I think the best way to get the job is walk in interview directly in the company, otherwise its wasteage of time to create profile on job websites.............or else if you have good contacts at mangement level in the organization that you apply for the job.

Beyond networking, thoroughly research the organizations you are interested in working for. Know the values and drivers for success for the organizations you apply to. Know who you need to know within those organizations, get to know them. Know how your KSA’a benefit the organization and be able to target your results based resume to the job you are seeking – show them how hiring you is going to help drive the success of the business.

When interviewing, go into the interview confident, but not too confident as to come off arrogant or aloof. BE YOURSELF. Be able to describe situations, tasks, actions and results of past behavior and experience that will describe your ability to do the job you are interviewing for.
