SO this isnt bullying persay, but I  couldnt find the right catagory to ask about this.

Ok so where do I start...I work as an assistant manager for a specialty retail store.  My manager is incompetant, lazy, and a pothead.  He partys with the teenagers that work with us on the weekends (often involving alcohol and possibly drugs).  He has an ambigious(sp) relationship with an (underage)employee he supervises.  He brags about fraudently passing his drug screen. He comes to work high.  He doesnt do any work, he lets the "kids" that work for us have free reign of the store.  He is the first in command next being the district manager we may have seen twice since  I have worked there.  I have contacted the assistant manager about his productivity issues (leaving out the reason it isnt done is that he is always high) {I have not mentioned the possible illegal "relationship" or the illegal supplying of alchol to minors because i know it will be denied by all parties and i have no physical evidence) the DM says that he and i have different managing styles that compliment each other and that is why he chose us as a team.  he said i should do my job and not pick up his slack and let him(the DM) manage him(the Store manager)  How can the DM see what needs to be managed if the sales are still up and the store looks like *****.  I have taken steps and forced myself to stop caring and not finish work that is left behind that he should have done.  I think that his practices reflect poorly on our company and know that eventually his performance and personal choices will prove his inablility, but do I just sit back and wait for him to self distruct or do I step in and do something?  Our DM seems to think he is the "end all, be all" store manager and the sales are incrediable and everytime he has stopped by for an annouced visit the store has been perfect because I am left notes to get everything in perfect order because we are having company.  Please any advise would be greatly appreciated.  I love my job, I love the company, and I know I could do 10000 times better job than the current manager or DM for that fact, and I hate to wait it out if my DM will be forever be blinded by this managers kiss** good boy image he sees when he seldomly visits our store

Your situation is fairly common on these Boards.  People say they love their jobs and do not want to quit despite an extremely difficult boss or co-worker.  You can stop right now picking up the slack for him and allowing the chips to fall where they may or you could choose a much wiser cause of action which would be to resign, effective as soon as possible.

Nothing is going to change!  Why stay in the middle of such a mess and be associated with people who do not care about their jobs and this company?  The GM is just as bad.  He is an enabler in a way.  You are working for people who are unethical and incompetent as well as complacent.

Start looking for another job.  You do not belong there!

I agree.  Stop cleaning up his messes just because they leave you notes saying there's a visit.  Let him live with his own actions.  Stop taking responsibility for what they're doing.  And get out before you get fired for not doing what they feel is your job---cleaning up the manure so that they can look and smell like roses at your expense.

I agree!   You should leave that store!  What ever you decide to do, you should be journaling everything.  This may be the only accounting of what is going on.  Once you have left you could contact the company above the DM.  If the minor that is in question were to go public or it is found out that you knew, you could be an accessory after the fact.  GET IT ON RECORD.
