Does it exist? 40 hr per wk - great pay

Posted about 1 month ago I'm not lazy, I swear! I work hard from 8-5 and practically run out the door at 5. I don't feel appreciated and my boss and I don't get along very well so I think that may have something to do with my feelings, but my question is this - is there such a thing as a great job that pays well where you don't have to sacrifice your life, family and friends in order to succeed? Before I started my current job, my now-boss and I talked about how we are only paid to work 40 hours a week and we are free to do what we want after that. We talked about how we have to balance our lives between family and work. Well, I don't have a family yet, but I really want one and I know I'm not going to attain that dream while I'm at work. Oh, and did I mention that the same boss who claimed there would be little to no overtime has not kept his promise. We're constantly doing things at the last minute and spend all night in the office because he didn't have the foresight to plan ahead. It's just the two of us so things get crazy pretty fast. What do you think? Am I asking for too much? |

| Posted about 1 month ago Unless you are salaried and work over 40 hours should be time and a half or some companies use comp time instead. Salaried positions pay more because a certain amount of weekly overtime is already figured into the pay. Even if you find a job where the pay and hours are perfect, there will always be other humans to deal with that can ruin even the most perfect of jobs with their toxic personalities. I've come to the conclusion that unless you work for yourself you will always have to compromise on something. Where I work we are constantly forced to attend educational or training classes, and now they are starting to offer this stuff online. But when I'm at work, I am busting my hump the entire time. I'm usually so busy during my shift that a 30 second run to the bathroom is often difficult to obtain, thus the term "nurse's bladder" - ours must hold gallons instead of ounces! So when it comes time to do the stupid "mandatory or you don't work here anymore" stuff I wait until my shift is over or I come in on a day off. No, I don't do it for free and no I won't do it while I'm there working. I wait until they HAVE to pay me overtime. This way they have to compensate me for the inconvenience of working there. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Two words- Government Job. While there are of course exceptions there too, most "government" workers (city, county, state and federal) just do their job, and clock out at the end of the day. They usually have good pay, benefits and more security than corporate jobs.

| Posted about 1 month ago I do not think you are asking for two much however in my experience it has always been time or money. I think it's possible to achieve what you long for; but IMO the issue becomes that other workaholic person who always do everything ten fold that screws it up for everyone else. That person eventually gets promoted and expects everyone to act like him or her because that is supposedly how they became "successful". The answer may be to work for yourself. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Life isn't fair. Either you have a life or you have the money, which you hope will be able to buy you the life. But it won't and you'll spend the rest of your life searching for both, never achieving the elusive "work-life balance." You will die a bitter person, cursing how evil the world has treated you. Nobody will have pity on you because they are in the same position and are still fooled that you didn't have enough talent to achieve what they think they will achieve. And if you quit and go to work for yourself, you will work 80 -90 hours a week and realize that regular employment is so much better, unless of course you're a mortgage banker sydicating all these crud loans. In that case, you've stolen enough money to never have to work again and life is in balance and you've found peace on earth. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I believe it is a balance that you have to attempt to acheive. Presently I joined an organization that is very strong on work life balance and therefore I am quite happy right now, as my beliefs fall in line with what the general practice is here. However, my previous employer believed that nothing should come before the company and therefore I was not very happy there at all. The key here is that at my previous job I was earning close to 15k extra yearly than I am now, which is a big chunk of change no matter how you cut it. But it is a matter of whether you want the money or the time, it is not realistic that you think you are going to make 6 figures and be able to leave at 5 everyday. |
