I'm wanting to know, with the rise of gas prices, what are some ways your organizations are helping employees from having the prices cut into their salaries.  Most of our employees are of the $8-10/hour (give or take) range and it hits them the hardest.  Some places are going to 4 10-hour days; what are some other suggestions or things that are working/not working?

Thanks!

You already mentioned it, but our company will be implementing a 4/10 schedule. There's mixed views because this decreases overtime drastrically and many of our employees depend on their OT pay. On top of this, we are also considering a bi-weekly telecommute for our G&A staff. That's still up for discussion, however.

I've helped some of my clients develop rewards programs for commuting with mass transit,   Bus pass, train tickets being subsidized.  Bicycle to work and earn $5 a day.  It promotes a healthier lifestyle and in the long run may reduce their health care costs.  (Unless they get hit by the bus!   lol

I think a way would be to get employees who live near each other to share rides, this way the employees get to know each other better and have a better working relationship.  Employees that live close enough could walk together, or ride bus together.  They also have a community transportation system that if possible can take them and pick them up if arranged ahead of time.    This would help with health and weight issues, walking that is.  Good luck I know the gas issue is on everyones mind.

I implemented a 4/10 schedule in my department earlier this year.  My staff is OT eligible yet understands the need to watch our bottom line.  Ultimately, they were completely receptive of the new schedule and are addicted to it now.  They use that fifth day to take care of personal business they would normally ask off for on the previous schedule.  The ultimate benefit to moving to this schedule has been documented increase in productivity, a drastic reduction in absenteeism and a cost savings for my team. . .particularly those who commute long distances.

Debra - great point about using that 5th day for personal business.  I too have to schedule off for things like various appointments - or even to go get gravel for the drive or landscape - they just aren't open on saturday afternoons - that is a good point.

My site runs 24/7.  Production crews run on 7/12 hour shifts, all the support staff is on 4/10 hour shifts.  The 4/10 shift runs Monday through Thursday the first week then Tuesday through Friday the second week.  You end up with a four day weekend every other weekend.

I think these are all great ideas!  I also think that gas prices have pushed the "alternative work week" to the front of the agenda for many of us.  Depending on the industry, a few days of telecommuting is very doable as well...if we can get past the stigma of  face time in the office.  Our business even started a customer service work at home pilot.  Not that innovative as other companies have done it in the past, but a great retention and morale booster for the reliable, good performer.  I'm a believer that if we can agree on the "what" ... which is the expected quality of the end result  - how we get there can be creative.

I got together with Bay Area Commuters in Tampa to come up with an Employee Commuter Zipcode Analysis, this helps us see if there are other people who live within our zipcode that we could possibly carpool with. I have recently started taking the bus as a way to cost on gas costs. What a difference! I love it and I try to encourage people to at least give it a try.
