We all do it - who is the new person; how do they dress, etc.?  Well, I love shoes.  yes that's right - I admit it.  I LOVE shoes.  So, the story goes like this - a pair of shoes says a lot about a person.  Do they want to be comfortable, do they care, are they trendy, and more.  What I want to know from you is....what shoes and why?

I LOVE a nice pair of heels - not stilts, but up to 3" - classy, maybe a pair of purple, peep toe, wing-tip mary janes...or my red hot patent heels with an all black outfit - punch up the color a bit....add interest.  My point, it is a surprise for people.  You look all professional and put together head to almost toe - then, WHAM! a surprise pair of shoes that match in some way, but show that I have a personality.

Ok, it isn't rocket science, but there are some of us that have those kinds of little quirks.  Seriously though - shoes, i can alsways buy them, they always fit - my feet don't fluctuate 10 pounds, and if they are kicky and fun, they can add spice to the most boring outfit.

How about you?

Do motorcycle boots count?  I have some clients that don't mind my motorcycle boots, if they're clean.  Of course, it is a relaxed environment and very casual dress code.  I'll arrive early, change from my racing leathers in the bathroom (just peeling them off) and then meet them on time in the board room.

I have heard the story that shoes tell a lot about the person.  Gee, I hope not.  I have to wear special orthopaedic shoes - very few colour choices as I am disabled.  5 minutes in any other kind of shoe and I am barely walking without holding a wall.  I must admit my shoes do not set off a classy outfit but maybe they would be okay on the motorcycle.  What do you think, Sir?  For me, my shoes are a matter of survival but I keep them shiny and clean looking so they complement my classy outfits.  I sure wish I could find patent leather shoes which would give me enough support.  Heels are definitely out for me.  I love jewellery though....

Good Point, Hawkeye!  Jewelry is another one of those kinds of things that can add a "surprise" to an outfit.  I love that and your point about having clean shoes, in good condition says alot about a person.  I have a dear friend who uses a wheelchair and really has no need for shoes, but makes sure that she wears clean, well kept, as colorful and complimentary to her outfit as possible.  She used to be really embarrassed that her legs and feet were kind of purple-toned, but has a great outlook and decided that there wasn't any reason that she couldn't wear colors, fun jewelry, and even shoes if she wanted.  In working for the past 6 years with people with disabilities, I have found many people who have accommodate their outfits to add their personalities to them.  Another gal I know is extremely fragile - she has Osteogenesis Imperfecta, but decided that she wanted a tattoo! she got one....on her foot.  She dresses to the nines too.  My point, I guess, is that shoes don't make the person - but for me shoes are a way for me to express myself; like the fun jewelry. for some it's eyeglasses - frames from Coach, or some other brand; some men have a thing for watches.  I would find it interesting if Sir walked into a meeting wearing motorcycle boots - i would say, "hmmm, wonder what that's about" - then I'd ask him about it after the meeting.  Never judge a book by its cover - or people by their shoes....but it's still ok to love them.

Today - a simple black dress just past the knee with a little white detail - red high heels - and just for you Hawkeye - a cute necklace with sparkling red cherries (too match my shoes).

So let's change the conversation to "How do you Express Yourself (even when you have to wear a boring suit)?"

The tie and the tie-tack!     At least for me.

I have "holiday" ties that range from cartoons to subtle weavings of a holiday theme object to them.  I also look for unique patterns and color combinations.  Other than the holiday types of ties, most of them have a somewhat traditional look until you look closer and you see they have a lot going on in them.

Tie tacs are also my favorite.  I have a plane, hummingbird, gun, shark, dolphin, frog, caduceus (which I use for HR interventions) motorcycle, scuba flag, ladybug, mini-railroad spike, Lone cypress from Carmel, "Spock" hand, skull and crossbones, ULLR, Thor's hammer, Celtic knot, Scottish thistle, and a few more, not including a selection of the typical, mundane types.    You can begin to guess my mood by my tie tacs.

I had never thought of tie tacks that much - but it makes perfect sense for sure.  That's awesome.  Thanks for sharing.
