I did this once in the past and it really helped me. I would recomend this technique to anyone who is willing to go the extra mile to gain professionalism.

Great advice for anyone who wishes to volunteer.  It is a good way to get experience, make connections, get a reference, or even get hired.

As an employer, be sure you have a volunteer policy and documents acknowledging the relationship.  Also, be sure your liability insurance, backgrounds, etc., is in place in the event of an accident.  Without all of this, you could find yourself losing a wage & hour claim if the volunteer makes one.  There are unscrupulous people out there and they will pull scams on you.

Volunteering is an excellent way to gain experience.  The expereince can be especially valuable if it consists of leadership and planning roles.  Volunteering is also an excellent way to make connections and to network.

Excellence can be attained if you ...
- Care more than others think is wise,
- Risk more than others think is safe,
- Dream more than others think is practical,
- Expect more than others think is possible.

As long as you are not taking a job away from somebody, volunteering is a create way to help in your community and to help yourself.

I would also consider internships. However, as SirFrey has advised, be aware of the scammers.

Some great feedback her folks,

I agree that volunteering is a valuable way to gain experience, references and possibly gain a job.

In addition to the other comments, I would like to add…be clear on what it is you are bringing to the organization you volunteer for and what you wish to gain from your volunteer experience (what specific skills you wish to acquire, etc). Choose the place carefully, as you would an employer to ensure your values match theirs. A good fit is important.

Volunteering is definitely a great opportunity for reasons stated by SirFrey, but also gives the person the opportunity to determine if the particular job, career path , industry or organization is right for them.  Kind of a Realistic Job Preview.  To avoid scammers, I think it is best that organization have a volunteer department and volunteers come on board via the volunteer process.  Different paperwork, different process, no misunderstandings of volunteer -vs- employee.  This works  well at my organization.
