Does Temporary Assignments hurt your Resume
| back to top |
Posted about 1 month ago Three years ago I decided to change career paths and join the HR Wild Side :). I took various temporary assignments with companies to cover maternity leaves and to gain knowledge in the field. I'm finding it now that employers look to that as a downside. How do I prove to them that I am looking for a permanent place and would like to start a career with their company? Tanya M. Papahristos

| Posted about 1 month ago Perhaps if you take a different approach to your resume and lump all of that experience into a timeframe. it is what you did within that time period and you can explain that although you were working as a temp for an agency, contract, whatever - the job knowledge is the same. I am more interested if a person has a block of similar experience, then necessarily how long at each. Caveat - make certain you do not deceive the potential employer into thinking all experiences happened with a single employer for a lengthy period, but to assure that you have 5 years of experience doing XYZ - even though it was with 4 companies, is better than showing 4 companies with short bursts of time. It is ok when you are first getting started or when there are things outside of your control - like moving due to family, etc. another thing you can do is directly approach the topic and state "I am looking for a long-term employment opportunity with an organization that will allow me to utilize my skills and grow along with them." |
