Ok, we're rollin' and a rockin' out here in California:

Regarding earthquake preparedness, (or other calamities), what do your companies do about:

  • Assisting employees with necessities in the event of displacement (lost homes)

  • Community assistance

  • Counseling

  • Etc?

I've not been through an earthquake...but have had some experience with flooding and watched some sites go through hurricanes.  The big one is EAP (employee assistance program) help for employees and families.  I know the company, depending on the severity, might truck in supplies for employees, fresh water, and anything to make the workplace better.  Once, during loss of water during a flood, the company I worked at opened up their shower facilities to employees and vendors since the employer was in an area that still had running water.  Other than that, it was a matter of us keeping informed about community resources available (like red cross assistance) and continuous communication with our corporate offices and other site offices to bandage any gaps that might exist for our population.  Continually talking to employees and managers in an informal fashion was extremely helpful.

From a business continuity standpoint, we were always required to have a plan in place on where we would shift the work and how we would communicate with everyone as well.  That was something we had to update annually as part of an audit process...yes - we grumbled, but it was a good exercise!
