I'm a pretty active blogger over at McArthur's Rant and have enjoyed meeting people from all over the world over there for just over a year now.  The one thing that I often wonder about it participation levels of HR folks on blogs.  Whilst I get a lot of visitors I get very few comments on my blog.  However when I post a question on LinkedIn I get dozens of responses.  What do you think about HR blogs and participation levels?

I think a lot of HR people realize it is a very public world out there and tend to refrain from blogging in a manner that could expose them to concerns from their employers or employees.    For example:  I am pretty active in political issues.   A great deal of what I do is under a different "identity" just to avoid issues which I know can be raised by my clients.

I have been thinking about adding a blog to my business website. I have 2 blogs now--one on my hobby (obsession) and the other related to a book project, which I posted in another forum.

I haven't yet set up the one on my website on general HR topics. I am trying to decide whether a blog would be better or just increase the frequency of my newsletter (currently monthly). I usually have more information than I can use and timeliness is always an issue. I have had a request by a community business forum to do an HR blog, so the thought was to set one up on my business site and feed it to the community forum.

I would be interested in the thoughts of others. I read 3 or 4 HR blogs, but I don't know whether others consider them valuable. Or if they don't what they would prefer to see as content versus what they get.

Todd, I can understand the alter ego for a political blog. I too am very active in political areas, but I do have to be careful. Especially as my point of view is not well matched with the community in which I reside.

Personally, I'd like to see a centralized blog-spot for HR.  That's what  I consider HR Guru to be, or to become.  Sometimes it can be overwhelming to stay up with so many sites.   I tend to go the business sites and journals and have much less time to blog about HR stuff, especially if I want to be active on HR Guru.  Time is a premium of which most of us don't have enough!

But a good blog site (which doesn't mean it has to be of people with similar mindsets) is always a good thing.  If you know of some, please share.

And "Yes!" Penny, I believe there is cause to be privately active on many issues.   There is so much out there that people judge you by, you may not want it all out there hanging in the wind.   We have some other forums about privacy and "social networking" sites, etc., that really addresses these issues.   While it wouldn't be too hard to guess my general thoughts on most issues becasue I tend to be very forthright in my writing, I wouldn't want everything I write to be public when I wish it to be private.
