Hi,

I'm new to the field of HR.  I'm employed with the state and has been for the past 13 years.  I decided to return to school to obtain my M.A. in HRMG and Development.  I graduated three years ago and it seems impossible to get my foot in the door.  I'm a memeber of SHRM and a few networking organizations locally (Little Rock, AR).  I would really appreciate any advice or tips from any of you.  I am open to relocation.

Sherlyn, I am new to the field also. I looked for a long time for a job after changing careers and a five year disability. I went to my state's Workforce program and registered. I took the time to talk to one of the counselors and she helped me to edit my resume to state my history in a more professional way geared to work in the HR field or admin assistant. I then spent time looking through the postings online daily. I finally landed an interview and was ecstatic. I knew nothing about the company or Hr period and am 45 years old, so school seemed out of reach. I researched the company I was to interview with, and counted on my computer skills to get me through whatever came my way.

I made it to the second interview. I was told in the first interview that I would be in charge of putting together an employee incentive program. I researched what other companies provided for their employees and came to the Guru site for suggestions. I used this information to compile a proposal to present to the president of the company during the 2nd interview. I got the job and have been able to catch on quickly and love my job.

I would suggest going to a local Workforce (What TX calls their employment agency) and see how things play out for you. It weeds out bad leads found in local papers and just plain weird offers from online sites like Hotjobs.

Good Luck to you!
