Stress Management

Posted 2 months ago Sometimes it is the simple concepts we need to hold on to.
A professor was giving a lecture to his students on stress management.
He raised a glass of water and asked the audience, “How heavy do you think this glass of water is?”
The students’ answers ranged from 20g to 500mg
“It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it.
If I hold it for a minute, it is OK.
If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance.
It is the exact same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heaver it becomes.”
“If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, the burden becoming increasingly heavier.”
“What you have to do is to put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it up again.”
“We have to put down the burden periodically, so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on.”
So before you return home from work tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow.”
Whatever burdens you are having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can.”
“Pick it up later when you have rested…
Life is short, enjoy it!!”

Posted 2 months ago So very true! I practice leaving work at work and home at home. A short commute certainly aids me in making the transition from worker to partner. My home life is perfect and work needs improvement - a balance if you ask me!

Posted 2 months ago Nice description of stress management . There are tons of paper how to reduce stress. One small tips to control your stress as well as your blood pressure (those who have ) . every after 2/3 hours take a small break . Be seated in your chair ,close your eyes ,keep your back straight without support . Inhale for 6 seconds ,hold it for another 6 sevonds and exhale it slowly without force in a very normal way for 8 seconds . Initialy you will have jerking problem while exhaling . But after few session it will be ok . While closing eyes dont put strees on the eye just close it and try to dream some good view like vast ocean ,long greeneries or beautiful flowers. This small breathing ( pranayama- sanskrit word) exercise will revitalize .

Posted 2 months ago Tapan, you're so very right! Often I forget to do this but when I do, I do feel relaxed!

Posted about 1 month ago Tapan - I agree completely. It is interesting because a few years ago I had an assessment of my workstation done to ensure it met my needs. During my interview with the nurse, she asked me how often I took a break. I said, oh, at lunch (4 hours from the time I start work). She replied, no, you need to take care of that and have a break at least every 90 minutes. Now I do. I usually do a similar approach to what you suggested, but turn my swivelling chair around so I am not facing papers, the phone and the computer and close my eyes. It really helps to relax the body and such a freeing experience. But I also feel I need stress to function. Does that sound funny? Do you feel that too, or am I alone on this thought?

Posted about 1 month ago I find that the adrenaline that comes from having much to do helps me to get it done. Because adrenaline increases the heart rate and breathing to a degree, it can be thought of as stress. Is this what you mean?
Posted about 1 month ago Pretty much. It is definitely adrenaline - what happens when you have something critical to do - you are under time constraints but the excitement you feel when are putting the pieces together and the more pieces you can match up brings you to another level - gives you a rush - a hgher understanding and suddenly a light bulb comes on and you accomplish it but in a way that you did not think possible. That is what I mean. Many people talk about stress management as an evil force - something you have to control. But I feel that there is a flip side which you do not want to turn off. It is so invigorating.

Posted about 1 month ago I agree! You can turn so many things into positives and use them. I once read that you can best conquer your enemy by making him your ally. Quirky, but it works. Rather than fearing something, find out how to use it. Stress management is really a matter of learning how to do that. Some people can panic or allow themselves to become overwhelmed. We all have our limits, and we need to recognize that and be firm about them, with ourselves and others. Panic causes chaos, so if we refuse to panic and just look at what needs to be done and how best to accomplish it, that will help alot. This is a great thread! It's something that we all need right now, when we're really feeling the pressure.

Posted about 1 month ago sarah, i agree with you that some degree of stress is required as a performance enhancer like the max productivity is when the deadline approaches but at the same time stress is required to be managed so that 'burnouts', 'flameouts' and ' heart attacks' can be avoided which are caused by continuous excessive exposure to stress esp those people who have to meet one deadline after the other. besides this , stress can be caused by bad boss, bad colleagues , too much of ambition in life / career and bad working environment etc. different people have varied tolerance to stress. some people are more severely affected even by little stress. all said and done, stress needs to be managed to keep it in healthy productive limits. there are various techniques to manage stress -take 5 minutes break after 40 minutes work, deep breathing when you feel stressed, regular exercises ,yoga, meditation and so on. i therefore feel that it is a very interesting topic and can be discussed till cows come home.

Posted about 1 month ago Stress is relative term . It varies person to person and it varies wthin a person . Today whatever seems to be stress tomorrow it may not be stress for the person . Again what is not seems to be stressful today tomorrow it may be . There is no the solution for the stress management . It is the person who is the best to write a prescription for him/herself . But one thing I found very common is that ,being happy is the greatest stress controller .Thinking positive and reamining fair are the other two capsules for controlling stress .

You are so right, we could discuss this here at HRGuru until the cows come home! And there are many good points here. |

Laughter is the best medicine. A happy heart is healing to the bones. Anger makes a heart sick and life is short enough already. |

Posted about 1 month ago sarah, i agree with you and tapan that laughter is the best medicine for stress but i wish to bring out that some stress is required to ensure that the olympic records are broken in every new edition of the game!!!

Posted about 1 month ago tapan, in a scale of 1 to 10, i would put it at 4 to 5 ie moderate stress is required to enhance the performance.

Posted about 1 month ago I really liked the comments made about laughter being the best medicine and reference to Reader's Digest. That made me laugh as I have to agree. Sometimes so much of what is around us - what we deal with in HR has a down side. You know, " You can't do that because......" Sometimes just having a smile goes a long way in relieving stress. For health reasons, I am supposed to take a 5 minute break hourly - push the chair back and clear my mind (no reading, no looking at the computer/phone, just chilling. It is very uplifting after getting clouded thoughts (what I was supposed to do yesterday and what I have to do in the next hour). I think jagdev50 hit on this point but I thought I would give it my personal touch. He is absolutely right on that point! What do you think of the idea of smiling as a stress releasor? I know it sounds quirky but works for me.

Posted about 1 month ago I would think that if you remember to smile sincerely, from the heart, it would help. I knew a man once who broke up with his girlfriend over her smile. He said that she had taken a management course, and now, even when they were arguing, she never stopped smiling. The problem was, he said, that the smile was not sincere. He called it "that plastered-on manager smile", and it annoyed him. A sincere smile, however, would annoy no one, and would go a long way to easing tensions for everyone.

Posted about 1 month ago Yes, this is true. A smile does go a long way in melting the stress. It helps to clense your mind from clutter and brings more positive thoughts an energy inside. You suddenly feel lighter, you hold your head higher and it even comes through when answering the phone. Of course, those that are around you with such anger, bitterness, and other negative feelings, will always stop and wonder what the heck we are up to when we smile!

Posted 26 days ago everyone sincerely smiling in a work place creates a wonderful environment but is it practically possible in the present day situations? smile invariably has to come from the boss so that others can smile back . bosses rarely smile because they are caught up in some target assigned to them . but smile one must because a smile on the face means that the person is not stressed.

Posted 26 days ago Smile is good but auto smile is no good . Bosses cannot smile except rare occasion . Reason being that if bosses smile they become friendly which the subordinates . On the other hand they also gets an idea that friendly person is not hard boss ,so chances are taken . It is a human nature that we can not seperate an action right /wrong from the entire person . If we can view that a person is good but sometimes has generated an action which is wrong . If we can take action as bad instead of whole person things become easy . To become a stress free one has to learn to forget the unwanted and dirty things . Off course A type persons are very rare to that . Instead of prison code type of situation if the people are known better to each other and off working relation is developed work stress is bound to go down.
