Just curious how long it took for you experienced HR people to get in the groove? Especially with hiring.

Hi, I noticed nobody has ever replied, so....

It depends on the person.  If the person isn't trained and doesn't have any natural knack for reading people and creating a forensic dialogue disguised as a casual conversation, it can take years, if ever.  Not everyone is a good hiring manager.  But training really helps.

Sir has a good point. Training can help, but if you don't already have a knack for it, it can take some time to develop. I have only been working in HR for a couple of years and I sometimes feel uncomfortable in an interview (me as the interviewer) and I have learned that I need to ask the person more questions when I feel this way. I feel that the more I interview the better able I am to maintain control and get the questions I need answered by the prospective candidates. I have asked my boss if it would be appropriate (acceptable) for me to interview with other departments to become familiar with their interview style to get a level of comfot for the specific needs for hiring for their department. This has helped me to grow as an interviewer. I hope my experience somehow helps you.

I'm adding a twist to the old addage "Practise makes perfect" and changing it to "Perfect practise makes perfect!"

The more you interview right, the better you will become.  One can continue to practice bad habits and never get better.

If you really want to get good at it, do some practice interviews with a really good interviewer and see if they will also allow you to sit in on some real interviews they do.

It takes years of practice to "get the hang of it", but only if you truly have the desire to learn.

Well I am a new HR Administrator and my view on the topic is that its all based upon how well you can adjust to a new working environment and how fast you can adopt new principles.
