The business world is cut-throat and competitive; you have to fight to get the best candidates. Sometimes, 'stealing' talent from another company is necessary. What do you think?

Maybe not "stealing", but "earning".  I have always advised people to keep their resumes, which we call cv over here, updated and registered with the best head-hunters.  Especially once you've reached the executive level.  Not only does it keep your options open, but it helps to protect you against an unnecessary gap should you suddenly find yourself made redundant, which can happen when the board gets bottom-line shell-shock.  Other firms registered with the head-hunters can regularly make offers to you, and if it's a good enough offer, you have the opportunity to renegotiate with your boss.  If the boss doesn't want to match the offer, you can then arrange to accept the offer and go on to the greener pastures.  I don't view that as "stealing".  I view that as good career management.  It's been a couple of decades since a firm could really expect you to stay with them for life.  And really, most of the time, you're only able to go so far with one firm.

I agree; if you want the best candidates, you must be aggressive in your search. Otherwise, you'll be left with the leftover applicants that nobody wanted.

You're not stealing.  It's a free market and if a person decides to change jobs, it's their decision.

I've found you should limit the number of people you take from one company in any given short period of time.  I've had corp lawyer-dogs sent to chew my legs off and while they never were successful they cost me a lot of money, enough to leave the company alone for awhile.

I like to call it "Mining".  sometimes you will see someone who will fit into your corporate culture betterand if their talent fits, why not try to acquire it?  many people are ALWAYS looking for the next thing anyway.  how many of us have our resumes out there even though we are employed.  you never know who or what talent you will uncover.  Like a fine gem collector - your organization wants the best.  Look for it where ever.  people won't come over to you if the offer isn't right.
